About Me

I am a creative and motivated dance student. I have many years of experience in the arts, in particular dance. I have studied various styles of dance such as ballet, tap with RAD and ISTD grading at my local community dance school as well as jazz and some understanding of street dance. I also first studied contemporary dance at GCSE and then followed it up into A Level in which then I realised I wanted to carry my dance training on. I am currently training at the University of Northampton, studying BA honours Dance. This has had a huge impact on the types of works I will choreograph as I have a more intellectual knowledge on ways to choreograph and my style has changed since focusing on training in contemporary techniques. The modules on my course include, technique, improvisation, professional context, Dance history and Analysis, choreography and Screendance. I plan to further my education in the arts, by getting as much experience and maybe even study another degree to do so.

Some of my earlier training includes achieving grade five for Ballet in RAD and tap with ISTD. I started to be more aware of contemporary dance when it was introduced to me mainly at A Level standard. I studied Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in a lot of detail so himself and his influences subconsciously became influences and became clearer in my later works for A2 Choreography. For example Martha Graham and Lester Horton were two main influences to Alvin Ailey and in some of my works you would see hinges, contractions and tilts which are a key characteristics in there technique/style.

Recently I discovered a passion for a dancer’s lifestyle and the effects it can have on their heart rate. By monitoring this I have achieved results that show the fast and sharpness of the heart when intense exercise is happening and the softness and regular beating of the heart when they physically are at rest. This gave myself and my group for my choreography an idea and a score to create a dance metaphorically showing the different beats of the heart throughout a dancer’s day to day lifestyle. Another passion of mine is people’s different views on their body image and how the media represents it.
