CURRICULUM VITAE

Laura Goodman

I am a creative and motivated dance student. I have many years of experience in the arts, in particular dance. I have studied various styles of dance such as ballet, tap with RAD and ISTD grading at my local community dance school as well as jazz and some understanding of street dance. I also first studied contemporary dance at GCSE and then followed it up into A Level in which then I realised I wanted to carry my dance training on. I am currently training at the University of Northampton, studying BA honours Dance. This has had a huge impact on the types of works I will choreograph as I have a more intellectual knowledge on ways to choreograph and my style has changed since focusing on training in contemporary techniques. The modules on my course include, technique, improvisation, professional context, Dance history and Analysis, choreography and Screendance. I plan to further my education in the arts, by getting as much experience and maybe even study another degree to do so.

WORK EXPERIENCE

ISTD – London
Receptionist and other roles in the headquarters

I worked at The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), which is one of the world’s leading dance examinations boards, for work experience in year 10. I developed organisational skills by finding the work experience myself independently as my school only had limited places that they had pre organised with companies which I wasn’t interested in so decided to find my own that would be beneficial to me. I came out of this work experience with a variety of skills including team work because I had to work with others, working with the public which is also communication skills and many more. This was a very beneficial work experience because from a young age I’ve seen how the industry works and what it is like working within the arts.

Waitress
Café Plaza – Eastcote, London

Through working as a waitress in a local restaurant/ coffee shop, I gained excellent communication skills and customer service skills from dealing with customers on a daily basis and a co-workers. I was responsible for managing the front of house on my own and dealing with issues when they occurred and keeping calm and professional, this made me very trustworthy and especially when working with money. Independence was another skill I learnt from this work experience after many years of working there on weekends.

PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE

Queensmead Schools Production of…

ANNIE – I was a main dancer and part of the chorus in an amateur theatre production of the musical Annie

WE WILL ROCK YOU – I was a main dancer and part of the chorus in an amateur theatre production of the musical We Will Rock You.

Numerical (2014) – a dancer in a trio 20 minute piece. Can dance be used as a pedagogical tool to develop an understanding of numerical patterns whilst retaining artistic integrity? This work approaches mathematical structures within choreographic tasks to question whether mathematics can be appreciated without working through equations.

Polysemous Means (2014) – I was a dancer in a 3rd year’s piece at the university of Northampton for her dissertation. The work explored how emotions can be expressed in contemporary dance performance and invites the audience to uncover their own meanings.

Tragic (2013) – a work choreographed by myself which was an interpretation of the crisis The Titanic. I had 4 dancers perform this for me in which I taught them the material. This was a very high standard work which received an A for my A2 assessment when studying dance at Sixth Form A level.

Never gon’ be the same (2013) – I performed a solo about losing someone that was inspired by Alvin Ailey and his work Revelations (1960). You can this was a very personal dance and became apparent when performing it, as you could see my emotions.  I worked well in this role as I got into an emotional mind set by having different tasks before performances such as reading personal notes that I had previously written that would help me get in the ‘zone’.
